This study explored the relationship between academic dishonesty (AD) and smartphone use among EFL university students in Thailand. The findings highlight four key points. (1) Cheating and plagiarism are widespread, driven by fear of low grades, exam difficulty, and academic pressure. (2) Students’ attitudes influence AD perceptions, with some believing cheating is acceptable if undetected, particularly due to poor English proficiency. (3) Smartphone dependence in language learning contributes to AD behaviors, as students recognize the risks but still use phones for information access and communication. (4) Smartphone use facilitates cheating, with students engaging in AD through texting answers, taking pictures of exams, and using mobile apps. The study underscores the need to regulate smartphone use and address students’ attitudes toward cheating to reduce academic misconduct.
